Free Up Space on Hard Drive

1. Empty the Recycle Bin

When you delete unwanted files from your PC, such as videos, films, music, and photos, they are not immediately deleted. Instead, they sit in the Recycle Bin, taking up valuable hard-drive space. To empty the Recycle Bin, go to the desktop, right-click on it, and select Empty Recycle Bin. A warning message will appear, asking if you are certain you want to permanently delete your Recycle Bin items. To proceed, click Yes.

2. Use Disk Cleanup Feature

Windows includes a disk cleanup utility called Disk Cleanup that can help you free up space by removing various files such as temporary internet files, system error memory dump files, and even previous Windows installations that may still be present.

Disk Cleanup can be found in the Start menu under the following address:

Disk Cleanup can be found in the Start menu under the following address:

Windows Administrative Tools > Disk Cleanup

You can easily find it by searching for it. Choose the file types you want to delete, ranging from Downloaded Program Files to Thumbnails, and then click OK. If you’re not sure what files are included for each item on the list, click the View Files button to double-check before proceeding.

3. Delete Temporary and Downloaded Files

You can delete temporary files, as well as downloaded files that you won’t need anymore. You can try this method without running Disk Cleanup. Navigate to

Settings > System > Storage

From the list that shows how your storage on the Local Disc (C:) is being used, select Temporary files and check the boxes for the types of temp files you want to delete before clicking the Remove files button.

4. Turn on Storage Sense

You can enable Storage Sense (Storage Settings Page) to automate some of this cleanup. Besides, you can configure Windows to delete unused temporary files as well as files that have been in the Recycle Bin or Downloads folder for more than a day or up to 60 days. You can also choose to move local files from your PC to the cloud via OneDrive if they haven’t been opened in a certain amount of time. I’m pretty good at emptying the Recycle Bin on a regular basis, but I’m also very happy to have Windows track down and delete unnecessary temp files and old downloads.

5. Save Files in A Different Drive

If you have multiple hard drives or a partitioned hard drive on your laptop or computer, you might run out of space on one of them (or partition). Fortunately, you can resolve this problem by changing the default save locations for apps, documents, music, pictures, movies, and videos. To do so, open the Settings menu, navigate to

System > Storage > Change

From here you can change where new content is saved. To save files for categories such as apps, documents, music, photos, and movies, you can choose a partition or a drive – even a removable drive such as a USB flash drive or a memory card – that is connected to your PC.

6. Uninstall Apps

You most likely have some apps and programs on your laptop or PC that you don’t use – either app you installed and then forgot about or bloatware that came pre-installed by the manufacturer. To see which apps are taking up space, open the Settings menu and navigate to

Apps > Apps & features > Sort by size

Uninstalling an app from this menu is as simple as clicking the app and then clicking Uninstall.

7. Store Files IN THE CLOUD

If you use OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, or other cloud storage services, you’re probably storing files and photos twice. You don’t have to do this, because all cloud storage services allow you to choose which folders are downloaded and saved to your computer (as well as in the cloud).

8. Buy Gift Cards

Along with all the above methods, you can choose a much simpler way. Buy a gift card! Were you surprised? You are right! Because you are not aware of the benefits of gift cards.
